“Well, what do you say? Are we gonna join them? Everyone’s going before the dance.” Carla stood at the horror section, peeking through the videos.

At almost ten o’clock, she’d gotten into Billy’s old habit—when René had worked there and he’d stuck around to help close up.

“Sure.” Why not take her out for dinner before the Valentine’s Day dance? René wanted him to move on, so Billy would fucking move on.

“I thought for sure you’d go with Heath.” Billy snickered. The right wing for the hockey team also had the hots for her, from what he’d overheard in the boys’ locker room.

“Oh... he asked me. I told him I was flattered and all, but...” Carla shrugged.

“I don’t get you at times.” Billy turned the key to z. “You got all these dudes wanting to date you.”

“I’m going on dates.” Carla meandered up to the counter. “It’s fun and all.”

“I know. I know. I heard it a million times. You don’t wanna get serious.” Billy tapped the keyboard to run the z reading.

“What’s wrong with only having fun?” Carla draped her lithe arms across the counter. She had the body of a ballerina, thanks to the dance classes she took twice a week. Honed, yet super-slim.

He should get her to pose for a sketch. She had great bone structure, even though her face was a cute round shape with apple cheeks. Maybe the forever sparkle in her dark eyes was what made her so entrancing. There was always a light seeming to glow from within her. “I get it. You wanna be a dancer. I get it.”

Carla did a pirouette. She’d been taking ballet and modern dance ever since she was a kid. Her sisters were also enrolled. Her parents deserved major props for getting their children involved in lots of activities outside of the school and reserve.

“Y’know, I could also get my major in dance in Toronto, besides Winnipeg. I wonder if Renny would let me stay at his crib?” Carla said more to herself. “He could show me around. Introduce me to people.”

There wasn’t a need for jealousy, because Billy understood she was referring to René in a friendship way. “He’s two grades ahead of us. By the time you get to Toronto, he’ll be well into uni.”

“True.” She clasped her hands behind her back. “Okay. Pass me the quarters.”

Billy shoved the pile her way.

She started counting. “Do you have drum group this weekend?”

“Yeah. Saturday morning. Over at Ned’s.” Which reminded Billy he’d better start smudging again. Ned was right. Communing with Creator was important. Maybe this imaginary being might help somehow.

“Are you gonna join him?” Carla rolled up a bundle of quarters.

“Join who?”

“Renny. In Toronto.”

For a moment, Billy’s blood froze. He’d gotten a kiss-off. A goodbye letter. René was probably planning on dating that Trent guy. His gut twisted. “I dunno.”
